Marri stave drum shell, Hardness 7.1kN
Marri stave snare drum shell, a visually and sonically powerful instrument crafted from premium Western Australian Marri (Corymbia calophylla). Marri is an iconic Australian hardwood, easily recognizable and prized for its stunning aesthetic feature: bold black gum veins that streak across the timber's honey-coloured grain .
Moderate-to-High Density: With a Janka hardness rating of approximately 7.1 kN and a seasoned density of about 850kg/m3, Marri delivers a sound profile comparable to higher-density woods like Birch or Oak, but with its own signature warmth.
Thick and Punchy Attack: This shell produces a warm, deep, and thick sound with a rich, punchy attack that excels in heavier styles like rock and metal, where it can cut through a dense mix without sounding harsh. Its lower fundamental note and pronounced mid-range provide a solid, earthy foundation and a powerful "thud" with a surprising warmth on the decay, giving it character beyond typical bright hardwoods.
The heartwood ranges from a creamy brown to a warm honey-yellow, providing a beautiful contrast to the unique, dark red-to-black gum veins (often called "bloodwood") that define the Marri species.
The 30 stave shell design ensures the grain runs vertically, maximizing the inherent stiffness and resonant qualities of the Marri timber, resulting in an extremely sensitive, dynamic, and durable snare drum capable of a huge dynamic range.
